Neu Hörizöns is a start-up label based in nipaluna/Hobart, the capital of the Australian island state of lutruwita/Tasmania. We run our titular club night, as well as the more mysterious Dimension 42.

For a long time, Tasmania has been an exotic destination whose rugged landscapes, rich soils, and mysterious and often dark history stand in stark contrast with its environs; the waterfalls, the orange-lichen-clad east coast, floaty sun-licked midlands, and green-hued temperate rainforests. This natural antipode lends itself to the two ends of the sonic spectrum that Neu Hörizöns pursues.

Hobart’s dance music DNA can be traced back to its Big Bang moment. Its nu-genesis lies in the founding of the Museum of Old and New Art, its associated summer festival MONA FOMA and winter counterpoint Dark Mofo, and their ascent to pop-culture-centric omnipotence. These events inspired a new generation of creatives to make sense of this new island paradigm, sometimes referred to cheekily as Cold Ibiza. Paired with the beautiful natural environment, shimmering synths, dream sequences, and ambient landscapes are natural inspirations of where we find ourselves in space and time.

But our recent history cannot be ignored. Indigenous dispossession, genocide, a history of plundering the land for all manner of materials, together with its cold, dark winters, Antarctic waters, and ruthless warping weather systems that spew forth fierce ocean forces, inspire Neu Hörizöns’ heavier side. Metallic tones, crushing kicks, evil drones, and violent basslines are rooted firmly in the fabric of this land.

Neu Hörizöns focuses on music that explores these themes, with a passion for oddness rather than conformity. At our core, we are a mish-mash of artisans and aesthetes whose mission is to bring you Trans-Bassian sounds from 42° latitude, whilst encouraging you to get in touch with your stranger side.

This is our first compilation, showcasing a few of the individuals who have come together to create on this new artistic frontier.
